A Vampire for me but not my Daughter

So I'm reading the vampire series. I, like most women who read the book, am into Edward. He is the archetypal male. His got the hair, the eyes, and the body. He also has the charm and the protective nature that most women find appealing. But here's the catch, he is the type of guy that I'd want my girls to stay clear of. If you just examine the way he treats Bella (take away all the meant to be love stuff and the fact that he is a vampire) he's behavior would alarm me as a mother of a teenage daughter. He tells Bella who she can be friends with, where she can go, and what she can do. He also uses he's charm to get his way with Bella. Now to see my point you'll have to step away from your love for Edward and examine his behavior from an outsider looking in. So if you've read the books what's your opinion?

Until we talked about it, I didn't notice that about him before. Now that you mention it, he does appear to be very manipulative . . . but in order to protect Bella from herself and other people who would harm her. I think he must justify his behavior as necessary for the greater good, don't you think? I agree completely that while I lurv Edward, I would not want Sassafrass to end up with someone like him. But who knows, once Bella turns "vegetarian Vamp" she may be able to protect Edward in some way and even things out between them. Go to wal mart by yourself after you finish Eclipse (you are probably reading it right now) and read the first chapter of the fourth book. After that, read the Host. It is unrelated, but has some steamy kissing in it. And the main male characters are attractive in a very different way than Edward and the female characters are strong, not like Bella at all. I think it makes a nice contrast to her vampire books.

The first chapter of the 4th book is found in the latest edition of Eclipse.

So I love vampire stuff. I own all of the Buffy and Angel dvds and have seen them all a million times. Flashlight and I always go and see new vampire movies and I think that 'Dracula' was a great book. But I've been hesitant to read the Meyer books. Part of me thinks that if will be a girly love story and I'm not really into those. So tell me I'm wrong and that I'm missing out by not reading them...

Chicken Little, there is some girly romance in there, but I have heard many women say that they keep the books on the night stand and read certain chapters to get in the mood . . . so that can't be all bad right? I think the Vampire/werewolf stuff is totally interesting in these books. But if you want an awesome book about vampires, I must recommend Dracula (of course) and also, The Historian. Beau Brummel and I both loved the Historian. It is more than 1,000 pages, but I still managed to read it in a couple days because it was so good. BTW, Beau and I tried reading the Name of the Rose and neither of us could get into it at all:( I don't know if you like SCI-FI, but the Host was really good and not just for the make out stuff. It was a really interesting take on aliens vs. humans. I really enjoyed it.

I've never read any vampire books but I'm intrigued.

Don't you think you have the luxury of being swept away by imperfect literary men now that you're older, wiser and married? You don't have to rely on him, raise children with him, etc. and you certainly wouldn't want your daughter to. I think it's kind of fun. I do wonder what influence a character like that would have on teenaged girls who are reading it. Would it make them less likely to see the bad/dangerous side in real life boys? I don't have experience enough to know.

I have never been into romances of any kind either CL but I recently got tricked into a book that was billed as historical fiction that was, in the end, an unapologetic romance of the most delicious kind. I loved it! I think it taught me some things about myself and my desires-some I didn't realize were there! And...it's definitely enhanced my love life over the last few weeks!
